Weird, Wonderful and Lonely Places I Have Spent Christmas

Christmas in Australia, Australian surfing santas

Christmas is different things to different people. As travellers, we’re fortunate enough to experience the magic of the holiday season in different cultures and places, although for some of us we’re ditching the travels and returning home for Christmas. I had a walk back through time to think about all of the weird, wonderful and lonely places I’ve spent Christmas Day over the years. Read More →

20 Cool Things to Do in Paris

The Louvre Palace seen from across the Seine, Paris, France

While other cities are frequently observed as having masculine characteristics, Paris is invariably described as being female. Sensuous, seductive, the unmistakeable city of light, love and romance, my affair with her began instantly as I first arrived off the train from Bordeaux in my early twenties. A frenzied and fertile breeding ground for the arts and novel ideas, Paris has at various times been the home of countless luminaries- indeed Honoré de Balzac went so far as to wildly proclaim “whoever does not visit Paris regularly will never really be elegant”. Severely in want of elegance, I recently re-visited Paris and fell in love all over again. If you’re in the mood for a worldly romance, you’ll need this hit list. Read More →

Sleeping in the Back of the Car, Lake Jindabyne, Australia

Camping in the back of my old car next to Lake Jindabyne. The stuff dreams are apparently made of

I loved my old Holden Commodore VS. An Australian workhorse, my hatchback version would normally be considered a family car, but I was attracted to it for the adventure it promised. With the seats folded down, a double bed mattress could fit completely flat in the back making it the perfect car for camping in or crashing out after drunken parties. When I first met my fiance, I thought a romantic thing to do would be to take her to the Australian Snowy Mountains and camp out on the edge of Lake Jindabyne in the back of my car. We slept next to all the snowboarding gear and strangely enough she didn't complain. I snapped this photo of our camping spot with an old Canon film SLR. I don't even know what settings I used as this was in the old pre-EXIF days. How times have changed from then to now- and this was 2005, not even that long ago! See more pheatured photos →

GoPro Hero3/Hero3+ Action Camera: Black Edition

Gear Review

The GoPro Hero3+.. fun for travel

Have you ever dreamt of filming yourself engaging in action sports, like surfing, skateboarding or skiing? No? Me neither. Although I’ve always loved a walk on the wild side, especially on a new continent, any action I couldn’t easily capture on my Canon EOS SLR (which comes with me everywhere) was happily confined to memories inside my head. However this year, I finally succumbed to the technological seduction and slick marketing and got myself a GoPro. And the verdict is: It’s fun, and great for travellers. Read More →

About Matt Edwards

Hi there. I'm an Australian writer, photographer and scientist in the solar power industry. I like travelling, peace and quiet, loud music, fireworks, travelling, campfires, surfing, guitars, starry nights, snowboarding, theatre, watermelon, dogs, skateboards, astronomy, come-to-bed eyes, snow and sunsets. I dislike early mornings, angry people, loud trucks and buses, and the Australian Stock Exchange. After travelling almost non-stop for ten years, I've amassed a huge collection of travel tales… some strange, some tall, but all (allegedly) true. Click here to find out more, or see
